Magical creatures in hiding

What if Stanley stumbles across some magical creatures. Except they're in hiding from an ancient society of people called the (insert name here) who want to kill them all. Perhaps these "people" have been brought up to hate them or something.

So this would mean there's no "portal" as such, everything exists in our "world" it's just hidden. Maybe the only way to access these hidden pockets of magical creatures is via magical gates - hence "Stanley Mason & the Gatekeepers".

Anyways... just a thought.
